CV 8 value versus label on decoder.

Hi,
This is my first post so please bear with me if I am doing anything wrong.
I was confused to find, when looking at CV 8 values, that the number read related to a manufacturer other than the manufacturer whose name was printed on the decoder's sleeve.
I was wondering whether this might be due to some manufacturers buying someone else's products and rebranding them?
