It's is a little typical of the programs of this kind, in that it is 'sensationalised' to a degree, but if that gets more people interested in trains, then hey, they might just become 'cool' again for a larger audience :-)
This episode is a few years old however, I've spotted a few California Northern Gen sets under construction, all of which have been in service for for a while now.

I suppose turning into a genset is better than turning into a river?

My email pal Gene Poon's finest hour was being in the right place at the right time for this series of pictures.

Yes I've seen those, a shame those weren't armour yellow (sorry Mike R :-) )
All joking aside, I do like the UP paint scheme and it's history, I just don't like the fact that there have been so many mergers, and UP tends to completely absorb all old paint schemes. At least with the ATSF and BN merger, a new paint scheme emerged, somewhat indicating the roots of the new company in places (more ATSF than BN I guess) , and there's very little Scarlett and Grey remaining...
I wouldn't have liked it the other way around either , no more armour yellow, but perhaps a little less so than what's currently the case...
