You don't even need a depot, if it takes up too much space. just a small platform, and possibly a space to park a mail truck. Older doodlebugs sometimes pulled a mail or other coach, or a couple of boxcars, and switched them too. Budd RDCs did the same on rare occasions, but the manufacturer's instructions said that pulling stuff would possibly invalidate the warranty.
Doodlebugs, having one cab, can prototypically reverse "off-stage", to an imaginary wye, or TT.
On a "micro layout", you'd probably want to avoid dedicating one track solely for one purpose.
