Athearn Genesis GP38-2 locos have arrived

Post by torikoos »

I had to be a bit patient, but I think it was worth the wait. My two SP GP38-2 locomotives have finally arrived.

Here they are , fresh out of the box.

Now they will need decoders, and a bit of weathering.

Koos

Picked one up as a impulse purchase at Ally Pally. V nice model and looking forward to a ex-BN machine in BNSF H1 some time in the future

In the meantime my SP machine will be post-dated to either a patched UP 571 or 574 - both hung on to around 2007 before finally getting a dose of Grey / Yellow

Let the weathering commence...........

That's a great modelling subject, although putting yellow onto an SP loco is almost like sacrilege :-)

Looking forward to what you will do with them.

Koos,

SP #4837 is a great choice as it retained its L window cab right up to 1995 at least - may even have acquired its patches with it intact before repainting into the yellow and gray.

Thanks for that Mike, I hadn't even looked into the history of the two engines that I bought (4837 and 4822), but good to hear that I don't have to modify at least one of them too extensively.

I've just received two Lenz Gold decoders today and fitted them, so they are ready to be put in operation now. The Lenz decoders unfortunately do not have enough flexibility in regards to lighting outputs, but have a good silent drive. I plan to upgrade these engines in the future with sound decoders however, and that will then also bring the lighting outputs up to speed.

Here's a few more pictures.
