Challenge 2015

For the next NMRA BR online forum I've shortlisted a few topics that could be the subject of the next Challenge which will run later this year, but it's never to early to get a feel on what interest there is on what topic.
So here's a couple of choices.
Build a Structure, as before.
Build a Car. This is any type of rolling stock , freight , passenger, mow , it's up to you.
Build a Locomotive, same as cars.
Build a Scene, a slight variation on a diorama, but this is intended to take a manageable area on your own layout/module and finish it!
Build a Track. This is to get those track laying juices flowing, either with factory rail, or lay your own, build turnouts, crossings etc.

For all the above the same simple rules are again in effect. Start from scratch, or finish something you started earlier. Build from scratch, or kit, from a complete clean slate to a modest super detail project, all free to choose. The goal is again to share your build and techniques, and get the project done by the deadline.

First though, we need a vote on which topic, you can vote on a maximum of 3 items, and you are allowed to change your vote this time as many times as you want, but before the end of the poll. You have 90 days.

We have a tie,

If everyone agrees, we will run two Challenges this winter, the Build a Scene, and the Build a Structure, perhaps you can do both, or incorporate one in the other.

The challenge starts on November 1st, and will run 4 months until March 1st 2016.

Looking forward to your submissions!

Koos,

Can you please add that the finished or unfinished structures or scenes must be entered into the Annual Convention contest room to be judged and for all to see.

Hi

Does a Virtual USS Panel Count as a structure? One would have videos of it controlling a railroad.

That wasn't the idea of these challenges Peter. They were intended to get the modeling juices flowing, and sharing the build techniques. This is not so much a competition, although there is a voting element involved at the end. The term winners is loosely used. Winners are those that manage to finish what they set out to do at the beginning of the challenge, before the deadline, and the BOD and/or other members can vote for their favorite amongst the entries.

The completed challenges and their posts can be used by the Roundhouse editor for future articles.

You're of course welcome to submit the (un)finished product into a contest for judging/merit awards if so desired, but it's not 'must'.

Let me rephrase that:

Why not share your modelling efforts at the convention for all to see...!!!

Finished, unfinished but let everyone see what its all about.

Hi everyone, as a "newbie" and with an interest in participating rather than just planning can someone advise on the protocol for entering the winter challenge please?

It's not very complicated. Just start when you're ready.

The instructions are as follows:

Post in the Challenges section of the forum and the title of your thread should be:
'Name 'winter challenge 2015' name of project'. (keep in mind that this winter the project should be a structure, or a complete scene/ area of your layout'). And obviously, keep an eye on the deadline :-)

Your first post introduces your project, quick outline on what you aim to achieve, prototype info if there is any, and then you post updates to your progress as replies to your first post. Photo's are encouraged. This way you share your know how. :-)

The instructions on how the first challenge of last winter ran, are here: http://nmrabr.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=739

Hi Koos,

Took the plunge and tried to post but not sure what went wrong (or I did or didn't do) but it didn't work out - you will see a post but there's nothing there when you try to open it and it seems to have an odd date (1970) attached. Any thoughts?

Regards

Dean

Hi Dean, I've found the topic, which I've now deleted. Somehow, you managed to post as a 'guest', so it looked as if you were not logged in. That's something I need to look at as it should not be possible as a guest, you should only be allowed to 'look' as a guest.

So try again, log in properly, and then try to post again.

THAT's IT.

This is the official notification for the end of Winter challenge 2015.

Unfortunately, we have had very few participants, we only had an N scale structure by Dean Halls , and a Roundhouse by Peter Bowen.

In particular Peter many thanks for your posting of progress pictures and techniques used, that is the primary goal of these challenges, to build something and to show others how you can achieve certain things.
Also Dean thank you for taking this challenge up, and please continue posting updates on this and other projects.

I will now move the build topics into the 'public domain' so non ,members or those not logged in can view it too! I will not lock them, so you can continue commenting and posting updates to them.

Thank you again. I'll have a look on the topic for the next challenge, and when it should best be running, considering the low uptake on this one this time.

Cheers, Koos

We will, but start date and theme are yet to be determined.
It needs a bit more publicity in advance to make sure more people participate, which seems where the last one fell over, sadly.
