Paper Mills

Post by Gloriousnse » Sat Mar 30, 2013 5:40 pm

One of the guys in our group is considering modelling this paper mill at Kimberly WI (Kimberly as in Kimberly-Clark) but more recently run by a company called NewPage I believe. (Also previously Stora Enso and Interlake Papers, it's changed hands a few times!)

Nicely for modelling purposes (especially for modules) it has two distinct 'LDE's, an unloading facility for inbound loads in tanks and covered hoppers (Imerys Pigments & Additives) plus the plant itself which in terms of the railroad is almost an end-on building flat!

Bing location: http://binged.it/175leQr

Unfortunately if you zoom in on the Google ones it shows the plants demolition in full swing - albeit still a rail-served industry with the rubble going out by rail! Interestingly the inbound section is still in use, wonder if it works as a 'transload' for other plants in the area...?

I believe it used either recycled or 'pulp' paper brought in as a base, as there's no sign of it using chips or pulpwood. The mill closed a couple of years back unfortunately, but lasted long enough to be switched by CN taking over from Wisconsin Central, here's some cool CN power switching...

There's a nice set of images of the actual mill building from the railroad side here:

And some of the kaolin inbound bit (referred to as Imerys Pigments and Additives (ex ECC?)

Some more from the same site - both parts are featured in several pics 2/3rds of the way down here - the Imerys site has been reworked several times over the years, the newest version (2007+) seems to be arranged to be switched with a trackmobile rather than the switcher as in the above image with the CN SD40-2W

Just down the river a short way is another mill (there were once loads in the area) at a place called Combined Locks - this one is referred to as 'Appleton Coated' - Appleton appear to produce paper with specialist coatings...

On Google:

On Bing:

Some prototype pics:

Things I like with this - the way the 'main line' visits one end of the site, then wanders off into the woods for a bit before appearing back at the other end - almost two modules again, or both sides of a 'roundy' layout?

Building a Paper Mill complex:

Paul Dolkos' previous layout also featured a sizeable paper mill, and the article was in the April 2000 MR. I strongly recommend anyone interested in modeelling paper mills to look at it.

That is a 3-part series in MRH Magazine - April, May & June. Very informative
