Hacienda Avenue - HO Switching in So Cal

Post by warbonnetuk »

Hi

This is my new layout, Hacienda Avenue, which made it's debut at ROTArail show in Fareham in April 2014. Overall size is currently 10' x 13.5"

https://www.flickr.com/photos/organize/ ... 4450333976

The inspitation for the layout is the Kimberley Spur, Fullerton, CA which is switched by BNSF with a wide variety of industries servered including plastics (chemicals & pellets, paper products (Kimberly Clark), corn syrup and distribution

https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place/Kim ... d8ea7397d9

As you will have noticed the layout is far from finished so ahead of it's next trip out to Tolworth Trainshow in Nov there is a lot of detail to add in addition to a 4' extension

Looks like Yahoo wants you to start a Flicker account, which works because I just have done! My photos are on Photobucket at present, but most seem to use Flicker now.

Dan did you use a separate piece for your track bed? On 11th Avenue I ran the top layer right across the street and cut out the bed to the track shape once laid. I'm hoping this will keep the board strong when I cut out the rear of the base board. I never did this as it was a single sided double track module, but now it is single track (it can still be a 12' double track module) it would look better if there was a view right under the bridges, like yours.

Thanks Keith

Mike - no I used a separate bit of 9mm ply as the "bridge" so it is pretty ridged. that sits flush into the 9mm MDF desk a with each end on a couple of 2x1 softwood risers. So while not completely rigid it seems pretty resilient.

11th Avenue is made of 6mm ply with an 18mm x 18mm stiffener down each side. Lowering the side will cut through that stiffener, so I'll have to fit a lower one.

Afternoon everyone

Been a while since I posted on here so I thought I'd do a quick update on progress on the layout. As mentioned in my above post 'Hacienda Ave' had a sucessful trip to Tolworth in so much as it highlighted a number of areas that needing 'fettling' to improve operation or the layouts visuals. Following Tolworth Trainshow I got a late notice request for from Bognor Regis club to supply a US outline layout for their 2015 show that was held last weekend so the plan of work was accelerated to cover a few presssing items including:

A pair of storage tanks added to the food distribution warehouse as a means to hide the joint between the backscene and the warehouse building
Completing the lightling pelmet
Redoing the majority of the chainlink fence around the storm drain as it was done in a hurry for Tolworth and frankly looked it
Adding a low relief warehouse at the far end of the storm drain board to provide a more visually pleasing cut-off
The addition of some low relief backscenes cobbled together from some pics off the interweb as nothing commercially available fitted.
Some initial weathering of the rolling stock - some relettering and graffiti decals + all wheels painted

So still plenty to do ahead of it's next outing in May inc:

Lots of small detail like warning signs and general detritus
Weather up the rolling stock esp the shove platform caboose
Complete some SoCal specific locos so #2022 & 2049 can get back to Texas / Kansas!

Below are a couple of pics taken at this weekend's show. Any suggestions / comments always welcome

Hi Dan

I'm rather keen on this new layout, looking forward to seeing it. Where did you get your Arizona Rock and Mineral ballast, I'm thinking about using it on my module.

Hi Geoff

Thanks for the feedback. At the moment Hacienda Ave is booked to go to Mid-Kent show (Maidstone) in April and also TVNAM in June

I had to import my Arizona R&M either direct from Caboose Hobbies (v expensive with shipping / tax etc) or via a mutual friend of ours while he was on holiday. Depending on colours you are after I'd suggest checking out both Realistic Modelling Services (http://www.realisticmodelling.com/) and Treemendus (http://www.treemendus-scenics.co.uk/) - their Earth Powder is great as a blank canvas for scenics. That said the AR&M ballast is brilliant and I've yet to find anything close in the UK

Cheers

Thanks for those Links, I do like the earth powders and scatters , looking fairly good for a US railroad. Indeed ARM is better, but IMHO not worth the shipping charges... I do like the fact that the business continued though, as it was for sale not so long ago as the original owner was retiring.

Forgot to mention that the Limestone powder from RMS I find good for accenting basic 'earth' and also for compacted areas like tracks and roadside areas

Been a while since I posted anything about the layout so here's a quick update.

In the New Year I got a late notice request to bring the layout to the Eurotrack show in Eastleigh which went well and generared another short notice invite to bring the layout to the BRM show at Ally Pally a month later. This meant that the list of jobs generated from Eurotrack (mainly weathering stock) had to be be accelerated to hit the deadline for Ally Pally.

The show itself went off well despite an early start on Sat to negotiate the M25 and North Circular and a mad rush get the layout set up for the 09:30 advance ticket holders. As well as myself the Region display stand attended along with fellow Seaboarders Alan Crooks and Chris James' own layouts. Despite the usual crowd of "US layout, RUN!!!!!!" punters I did get a few enlightened souls who wanted to chat about US outline modelling along with show invites for Royston (prob 2016) and Uckfield later in the year in Oct.

To finish off here are a few pictures taken at the show inc some of the newly weathered stock and new addition to the local power pool BNSF #8709
