Model Railroader 75 years DVD

Post by 130344 » Mon Dec 31, 2012 5:58 pm

Has anyone bought this/got experience of using it?

There's a lot of criticism of the DVD's interface on the Kalmbach site - I thought it would be a good way of clearing out old hard-copy magazines, and a much faster way of finding the article you want, but the Search is said to be poor, and a lot of features you would get with regular Acrobat files seem to be missing, if you can rely on the comments. Also some scans seem to be missing certain areas, especially on double-page spreads, and you can't rotate pages.

Don't want to pay £120 or so for something that is difficult or frustrating to use!

Or perhaps it's only if you don't do the full install - can you install onto a backup drive instead of the built-in drive on your computer, so as not to take up space on your (usually smaller) internal drive?

I've installed it on my main hard drive, takes over 23Gig. Seems to search ok and everything displays that I've come across.
I found I only used the old mags to find articles, it is far easier to search the digital version than look through real ones. Plus I only had back to the 80's and they took up a lot of room. I'm not yet convinced to go digital for new issues, perhaps if I buy an iPad?
I had a problem installing, contacted MR and they solved it, mainly caused because I use a Mac.

Thanks for the info, Mike. I'm on Mac too, and also want to install on a (portable) backup drive if possible, though this might be something that's barred. Not so I can cart it around, just so I can avoid taking up internal hard drive space.

I tried to rationalise (ie save space) a couple of years ago by going through all the old issues and tearing out only the pages I thought I was or might be interested in, then throwing the rest away.

Trouble is, everything is now even harder to find, plus I keep feeling there might be stuff I've thrown away that I'll get interested in later!

Might be a good late Christmas present - I haven't got anything yet...

I'm not sure if you can install on two drives, there's nothing in the instructions that say you can't. One shared drive may work if the whole installation goes on it.
You can't access the PDFs directly, they are locked, you have to go via the MR program. You can save favourites and bookmark articles, so it is easy to go back later without searching again.
The pre 2004 mags are lower quality than the printed version as these have been scanned. July 2004 they must have changed to sending a file to the printers, as the quality vastly improves to as good as a printed version.
