RS Tower 1 February 2014

The RS Tower crew had a shake-down session in Exeter on 1 February, and kindly invited me along to play trains. Here's a few snaps: http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2824/12253971003_3920574195_z.jpg NREX 5479 at RS Tower by bxmoore , on Flickr NREX 5479, by Mel Rogers http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5538...

Re: ALCo RS Best HO model

AFAIK the proprietary models all have their different pros and cons - you just have to decide which bullet you want to bite.

For more info, I'd suggest asking the same question on the FB group, as there's a few people on there who will have most of the knowledge.

Cheers, Dave. It would be great if you could let us know how the Benson meet went, and whether you required a DUKW to get there, or just a snorkel.

Re: Benson meet.

Dave,

I think your best suggestion is to call the people who are registered in the most recent Roundhouse (December 2013) as the named contacts for "details and directions" for the event, Robin Swan & Mike Ingham. If you don't have it handy, then send me a PM.

Re: Doodlebugs

Singly. Very rarely, if ever, did they work back-to-back, so don't be tempted. Some had a trailing passenger car/baggage, PO or combine, and they also hauled a few boxcars from time to time, in a mixed-train way. You can also reverse them out of the scene too, although they were usually turned on a ...

Re: Wheel spots

From memory, it's to show the freight car wheels have been inspected for fractures. The yellow spots showed that the work had been done; if a white spot, then the car had prohibited wheels and was possibly barred from interchange. It happened in the early seventies. http://farm9.staticflickr.com/808...

The boards were set up at the December meet. Still to do all the electrics (for which I'm getting a lot of help). http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2866/11370522855_d7d872262c_z.jpg Boards, 14 December 2013. by bxmoore , on Flickr Channels cut in underside for wiring: http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3781/...

Re: Which decoder for Bachmann 0n30 2-Truck Shay

Best thing to do is to put into Google, in inverted commas: "Bachmann On30 Shay" and "decoder". You should be able to find a few bits and bobs that may help you. It may take a few pages of scrolling.

Re: Which decoder for Bachmann 0n30 2-Truck Shay

Assuming you don't want sound, I'd always go with any Lenz decoder that has BEMF. With steam locomotives, they smooth out all but the roughest of drives, and provide ultra-smooth starts and stops with minimal or no tweaking required. They're also easy to programme. I've never seen better.

Looks great, Mike. How long is platform 3? Just musing on whether it could take the arrival of an Amtrak terminating train that could be switched and turned around to go back to staging.

Re: Winter Project - West Mary Yard - Postponed!

Keith, I'd still consider using the two boards you have (making 12') for an HO switching layout. Have the track plan above, and just stretch everything. The loop becomes able to hold a good few cars, and the industry leads will take 2-3 cars, and still have some empty track on the approaches, even w...

Re: Bachmann HO Steam with sound

I currently have two Bachmann HO scale locos OMWB, a 4-6-0 with sound and a 2-8-0 without it. Both cost £30. The first was too much of a bargain to dismiss, but isn't really the right type for it's intended project as it's wheel arrangement wasn't that common and the drivers are too big, whilst the...

Re: Western Union November meet 2013

It was a most enjoyable meet, Koos. A few, diverse, electrical/electronic niggles of the type that seem to turn up in threes and which stopped things for amounts of time, but other than that, we ran a lot of trains to the printed switch lists produced by Peter L-J, and we had a great time. Which is ...
